Why is Live View showing content playing when my screen is black?

Prev Next

If Live View in Beam or Control shows your content rendering perfectly but your physical screen is completely black, it usually means the Skykit media player is online and broadcasting, but the display panel isn't receiving or showing the signal.

Basic Troubleshooting

To rule out physical connectivity issues with the TV or monitor:

  • Power Cycle: Turn the display off and on again using the remote, or unplug the TV's power cable for 10 seconds.

  • Check the Input: Ensure the TV is set to the correct HDMI input source.

  • Test the Port/Cable: Move the Skykit HDMI cable to a different HDMI port on the TV, or swap the HDMI cable entirely to rule out a defective cord.

  • Isolate the Device: Plug your Skykit media player into a different monitor or TV entirely. If it works there, the issue lies with the original display's settings or ports.

For E500 Device Users

If you are using an E500 media player, ensure you have pressed the physical EDID button for each HDMI output. Refer to your E500 User Manual for more information.

What if ONLY video content is black?

If other content types display perfectly but videos result in a black screen (with or without audio), you are likely experiencing a hardware bandwidth or compatibility limitation.

Upgrade your HDMI Cable (Most Common)

Older HDMI cables cannot handle the data loads required for modern video formats, especially HDR (High Dynamic Range) content.

  • Replace your cable with an HDMI 2.0 cable (commonly labeled as High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI) or newer.

If Upgrading your HDMI Cable Doesn’t Work

In rare cases, older commercial displays or TVs have HDMI ports that do not support modern video codecs or HDCP (content protection) standards. In these cases, even if your HDMI is updated, the HDMI ports could be too old to support modern videos.

  • Connect the Skykit device to a newer display to see if the video plays.

  • Check the specifications of your specific monitor to identify HDMI port version and confirm is it 2.0 or greater.
